Episode 114- What Anti-Asian Racism Actually Looks Like (According to Science and History)
Susan Ahn Cuddy was the first Asian American woman in the Navy…then the first Gunnery Officer…then Codebreaker. If anyone epitomizes racial barrier-busting, it’s Susan.
According to Science.org, anti-Asian hate crimes are exploding all across the US. A shocking 16% of Asian-Americans have been the victims of hate crimes (defined as violence based on ethnicity, race, or religion.) And 1 in 3 Asian Americans have changed their daily habits to avoid violence or discrimiation.
That would be like going out to dinner with seven of your closest family members, knowing statistically one of them has been the victim of violence based on race, and two others have stopped taking public transit so they won’t get attacked. After Todd and Joe get over their initial shock, they’ll investigate why hate crimes are on the rise, and what discrimination really looks like in everyday life. Spoiler: it looks nothing like the sensitivity training your company forced you to sit through.
This week we also welcome Jhoan Perras to The Re-Engineered You as our guest co-host! Jhoan will present the history subject of the week, Susan Ahn Cuddy. Whose life was basically a more exciting version of Men of Honor, the movie. We’ll talk about what made Susan such a badass, how she became a Nazi-Busting master, and how Susan’s final feat of awesomeness was overcoming racisms within the Government to become a head codebreaker.
