Episode 132 - The Storytelling Trick That Can Hack People’s Brains

The ‘Value Change’ is used in the best speeches in history, the best jokes in standup, and the best persuasive arguments. So…how do we steal it?

Storytelling is absolutely essential to leading a good life. Being funny, making friends, and getting bosses to listen to you are all dependents on your ability to tell a quick, witty tale. Heck, humans crawled out of the caves telling each other stories - to band together and hunt mammoths…or club the neanderthals next door for more land and resources. Our brains learn best when we learn from stories, and we literally produce more dopamine and feel more rewarded when we get our news from good storytellers.

Today Todd and Joe look at a unique trick that’s used in every good story, speech, and joke, but hardly ever gets mentioned. The ‘Value Change’ is what Martin Luther King used over and over in his I Have A Dream speech. It’s what made Winston Churchill so darn compelling when he was convincing Britains to fight the Nazis. And as we’ll hear, it’s what makes comedian Kumail Nanjiani so effective at making us laugh.
