Episode 91 - Sidney Deal & Possessions

Is there something wrong with us for liking our stuff a little too much? And if we’re feeling cluttered, is there a painless way to part with our old junk?

A year ago, Twitter and social media exploded when a 27-year-old father protected his car from having the window smashed-in by police and bystanders. Meanwhile, his young daughter lost consciousness in the backseat in the Las Vegas heat. This story seemed like a clearcut case of a bastard dad valuing his car over the life of his little girl. But on today’s episode, we’re out to explain why it’s in our nature as humans to prioritize our possessions. So if you’ve ever put your old furniture in a storage unit, then this is the episode for you!

We also discuss the primitive origins of man’s attachment to his things (after all, how good is a hunter without his lucky spear? Or a farmer without a trusty plow?) and we’ll talk about why our brain might over-value items we already own vs items we don’t yet have. Most importantly, Todd and Joe will talk about why all of us should own stocks in self-storage facilities, and why we plan to live in U-Store-It pods when the apocalypse arrives.
