Episode 109 Why Masters Eventually Ditch The Online Classroom

Chess geniuses don’t sit at home reading about game theory. They immerse themselves in the culture. So why should we assume any sort of mastery would work differently?

On last week’s episode we talked about how Joe has spent his life learning through online platforms like Masterclass, MOOCs, and Coursera, which hasn’t always served him well. On this week’s episode we turn the tables and talk about Todd’s extroverted path to mastery. Clubs, social groups, gyms, and engagement. Then we discuss the science of why cultural immersion into the skills you’re improving can be more motivating, and more critical to your success, than building a base of theoretical knowledge online.

We also share stories of our own challenges (and failures) to plug into the social networks around the skills we’re pursuing. Then we challenge you, the listener, to stop adding arrows to your quiver of knowledge, and instead take to the field and develop the muscles to become a master archer...of whatever skill you’re trying to hone.
