Episode 108 This Is How Masterclass Knows You Won’t Achieve Mastery
It’s the wild-west of online learning! So why can’t Masterclass earn us academic credits? And why hasn’t the internet replaced traditional colleges yet?
Joe has taken almost every type of course, lecture, or class available through online learning platforms. Masterclass marketers have a name for this type of consumer. CATS. As in: Curious, Aspiring, 30-Somethings. This isn’t a compliment toward millennials, either. It’s a business model designed to entertain adults who have been burned by the education system and are desperate to get a leg up in business. But instead of a competitive edge, Masterclass sells them glossy entertainment in the guise of education. Think we’re kidding? Ask any hiring manager if they accept “Took a Masterclass” on a resume.
During this episode Todd and Joe go through the Top 10 online learning platforms and weigh them on a simple 2-point scale. Will they get us hired? Will they count toward college credits? Then we ask questions like: Should I buy a subscription to Masterclass, or The Great Courses? Coursera or Skillshare? Thinkific, MOOCs, or Sophia? Who wins in the arena of online learning? And why are so many of their certificates worth less than the electrons they’re printed on?
