Episode 96 - Frances Glassner Lee & Discovering Purpose
What if we haven’t found our purpose by 30? Or 50? What if we’re missing something fundamental about life’s purpose? Well, we have some fascinating stats about that…
If Frances Glassner Lee had been born in the binge-watching age, she would have been a murder-documentary junkie like the rest of us.There are hundreds of podcasts, Netflix shows, and websites devoted to bloody crimes of passion. But there was one crucial thing holding Frances back…she was born in 1878. And she really, really wanted to hear about gruesome murders, despite the fact that exposing women to violence was frowned upon in polite society.
To scratch her itch to hear about local homicides, Frances took matters into her own hands. Literally.
On today’s episode we dive into the many, many roadblocks that held Frances back from her life’s purpose. Then we talk about what life looks like when we lack personal purpose or calling, and we get into the Japanese philosophy of Ikigai. Which translates to “a reason to get up in the morning”. We also discuss how we could find purpose by following the Ikigai formula, which is almost mathematic in its simplicity. And finally Joe drops the bomb on us - revealing the statistical age most people find life’s meaning. Spoiler: It’s later than you might think.
